American singer, songwriter, and Grammy-nominated artist Tori Kelly released her newest, Never Alone, just this year as part of her newest project, Hiding Place. Tori Kelly produces music for mainstream media, but she is a practicing Christian and has always wanted to release an album that talks about her faith.
According to an interview, Tori Kelly takes her inspiration from Psalm 32:7 which says, “You are a hiding place for me; you preserve me from trouble; you surround me with songs of deliverance.” From the title of the project, Hiding Place, the song Never Alone was born from the theme of taking refuge in the Lord and knowing that God will always be with you. Tori’s goal was to have an album where everyone who listens to the songs will be encouraged and uplifted, and that they may have hope even if they are in their darkest place.
Never Alone is definitely a reflection of that idea that whatever happens God is with you and that you are never alone. The song is slightly melancholic and thoughtful in its approach as it starts off with the imagery of someone who feels like they don’t belong anywhere.
However, the pre-chorus questions that mindset as it leads into a strong chorus that speaks about pain and struggle but recognizing that there is One who will always be there reminding us why we are never alone. These are reminders that can be seen in Joshua 1:5 and Hebrews 13:5.
“No one will be able to stand against you all the days of your life. As I was with Moses, so I will be with you; I will never leave you nor forsake you.” – Joshua 1:5
“Never will I leave you; never will I forsake you.” – Hebrews 13:5b
Both verses are definitely echoed in the song especially in the verses chorus. It’s a great reminder that regardless of how we feel and the struggles we face, we never have to face it alone.
Even the bridge of the song tells us that all things work together in the end, no matter what we face just as the Apostle Paul reminds us in Romans 8:28.
“And we know that in all things God works for the good of those who love him, who have been called according to his purpose.” – Romans 8:28
This song is definitely a great reminder of God’s greatness and faithfulness with us despite the troubles we face and the lies that the enemy speaks to us. The song is a great encouragement and one that you should definitely add to your playlist.
