Though my father and mother forsake me, the LORD will receive me.
Psalm 27:10

David, the man after God’s own heart, knew how it was to be disliked by his parents. Reasons why it was so is not stated in the Bible but we can clearly observe how David completely depended on God for guidance, wisdom, affirmation and love. As his Ultimate Parent, God faithfully assured and reassured David throughout his lifetime.

This May and June, we are celebrating days to honor moms and dads. While many are honoring their parents on these occasions, others are contemplating on their longing for parents that they may have lost or never had at all.

Our God who is faithful to David is also faithful to those who yearn to receive love from their parents. He is “a father to the fatherless” (Psalm 68:5). He continues to assure in Isaiah 49:14-15, saying “Can a mother forget the baby at her breast and have no compassion on the child she has borne? Though she may forget, I will not forget you! See, I have engraved you on the palms of my hands;

Before we and our parents were created, there’s God! He is our Ultimate Parent! Our present yearnings in family relationships are opportunities for God the Father to exalt His name and glory in our lives. It’s good to recognize these things but it is also best to recognize God beyond our state. He alone can satisfy.

As you move through seasons in your life, though your parents are not around know that God is there. “Be strong and courageous. Do not be afraid or terrified…for the Lord your God will be with you; he will never leave you nor forsake you. … The Lord himself goes before you and will be with you; he will never leave you nor forsake you. Do not be afraid; do not be discouraged.” (Deuteronomy 31:6, 8)

Face each day courageously carrying His promises in your heart. God assures you in Isaiah 46:4 that “Even to your old age and gray hairs I am he, I am he who will sustain you. I have made you and I will carry you. I will sustain you and I will rescue you.”
