Thankfully, for Christians, there are more than a few Bible verses for patience to serve as a reminder.
What is patience? According to the dictionary, patience is defined as the ability to accept or endure delay, trouble, or suffering without responding in anger. It may also involve persevering in the face of difficulties. Life is full of challenges and many can find themselves losing patience, questioning why they put up with sufferings.
For moments when you feel like you are at your wits’ end and you can’t handle another frustrating issue, read these seven Bible verses for patience and remember that God is always there to help you.
1 Timothy 1:16
1 Timothy 1:16 reads, “But for that very reason I was shown mercy so that in me, the worst of sinners, Christ Jesus might display his immense patience as an example for those who would believe in him and receive eternal life”.
Christ Jesus came into the world to save even the worst of sinners from death. While being nailed to the cross, Jesus uttered the words “Father, forgive them, for they do not know what they are doing”. When He died on the cross, the act itself is not only to show His unconditional love, but also to display His perfect example of patience.
1 Timothy 1:16 says that just as Christ has shown patience to sinners, His followers must also be patient and become an example to other believers. In return, He will give them eternal life.
Colossians 1:10-11 reads, “… so that you may live a life worthy of the Lord and please him in every way: bearing fruit in every good work, growing in the knowledge of God, being strengthened with all power according to his glorious might so that you may have great endurance and patience”.
This Bible verse tells us that God grants those who believe in Him powers of endurance. Having faith in God will give you the ability to withstand hardships and adversity in life. You will be able to approach even the most difficult problems with patience as part of the fruit of the Spirit. No matter what happens, remain patient because God is by your side.
Romans 15:1 reads, “We who are strong ought to bear with the failings of the weak and not to please ourselves”.
How easy would it be to be patient if everyone did everything according to your plans? The true test is being patient with those who have lower patience levels and putting your own pleasure last.
In life, you will encounter people who will test your patience. Chances are, these people will be more impatient than you are as well. Instead of letting anger take control of you, remember that being the bigger person bears fruit.
Ephesians 4:2 reads, “Be completely humble and gentle; be patient, bearing with one another in love.”
As a follower of Christ, you are called to live in a manner worthy of honoring Him. This is why Christ called you to be patient and love others — even those who you dislike. Remember that being patient not only demonstrates love, but also avoids unnecessary conflict.
Philippians 4:6 reads, “Do not be anxious about anything, but in every situation, by prayer and petition, with thanksgiving, present your requests to God”.
Many people tend to worry about their hardships in life. The Bible verse Philippians 4:6 reminds you to cast out your anxieties. When you are experiencing problems, always remember to turn to prayer. God is ready to listen to your fears and requests. Afterward, thank God for all that He has done for you.
Psalm 40:1 reads, “I waited patiently for the Lord; he turned to me and heard my cry.”
God certainly listens and answers the prayers of His people. Therefore, we should be patient and pray without ceasing. You may start to lose heart or become discouraged when going through hardships in life, but remember that all circumstances happen according to His plan for His own purpose. His plans are to prosper you and not to harm you.
Proverbs 15:18 reads, “A hot-tempered person stirs up conflict, but the one who is patient calms a quarrel”.
If you are a hot-headed person that gets angry quickly, even the slightest provocations can end up offending you. In the end, this can create unnecessary fights and arguments. What was once a minor issue that can be solved easily can become a major conflict. But if you are patient, you are more likely to defuse strife. Keep calm and always be slow to anger just like God.
There are truly so many encouraging Bible verses that will help you persevere in life. Even in moments when you feel like you are running out of patience, there’s no shortage of scriptures that will remind you that you are not dealing with hardships alone. We hope these seven Bible verses for patience can help you remember that God is ever-present in your life.
