It was in my preteen years that I learned the word boldhas two meanings—being naked and being courageous. Having different connotation does not necessarily mean they are mutually exclusive. It takes boldness to be naked and courage can really feel like being naked. Being naked even to oneself would take a lot of courage.

Inner Self vs Selfie
A Stasi Eldridge fan would come to realize after reading at least two of her masterpieces that the world has been deceived to hate women. The misogynistic mindset has plagued the descendants of Eve so much so that some of them do not even dare to look at themselves naked in front of the mirror. Discomfort has reigned over the beauty of God’s creation that is she. Being critical to one’s physical appearance is just a manifestation of a deeper discomfort that even men refuse to stare at — the heart.

A famous quote of Socrates is “an unexamined life is not worth living”.  Life can only be lived well if one has the courage to pursue the meaning of life and accept that being naked before God is a must. This spells shame.

Within our hearts lie a rebellious spirit (Genesis 3:6; Jeremiah 17:9) that wants what our understanding comprehends as best (Genesis 11:4). We all have a stubborn longing to be independent and honored ‘as we are’. This is the reason why we easily get accustomed to selfies, to telling the world what we have and parade what we can offer. We seek happiness in almost anything that comes our way, because deep within our hearts lie the loneliness of being independent—of being ‘as we are’.

Peace Came Along
We know the heart-wrenching but beautiful story of redemption at Golgotha. Jesus Christ gave everything.  His Father, the Creator of all things and the God of all gods desired reconciliation with His people. The sacrificial death also sought that they will be at peace with who they really are—created in the image of a commune God. Being autonomous is after all, a life of loneliness. Misery loves company, as they say. They pull and push each other to the brim. The company forms a pattern besieged with a lie that they are all living the independence they are entitled to be. But where is independence when one lives in conformity to the misery of the other?

Peace has proven to be a relentless pursuit of the lonely, unaware that the Source of true peace relentlessly pursues them.

Holy persistence always pays off. In whispers, the heart is convinced that being independent is impossible. Conforming to the happiness of this world is tragic.

So the heart will be confronted with the brutal fact that it will remain lonely until it fully accepts the perpetual truth that it is meant to beat for its Creator, whose own heart beats for His people.

The love given provides the heart with the courage to live and speak of its Source.

He has made everything beautiful in its time. He has also set eternity in the human heart;
yet no one can fathom what God has done from beginning to end.
Ecclesiastes 3:11
