LEAVING THE FAMILIAR TO STEP UP AND OUT
“By faith Abraham obeyed when he was called to go to a place that he was to receive as an inheritance.
And he went out, not knowing where he was going.”
“Now the Lord said to Abram, ‘Go from your country and your kindred and
your father’s house to the land that I will show you.’”
Have you ever agreed to do something or go somewhere you know almost nothing about?
This was the case with Abraham. The first story about him in the Old Testament, aptly titled “The Call of Abram”, began with the Lord commanding him to leave his homeland and everything he was familiar with to go to a far-off place. Nothing much about the new place was mentioned when he was given the assignment. There were no pictures. There was no orientation about the culture and the lifestyle in that new territory. But without question, he and his kin obeyed. The only thing he was holding on to was God’s word. What a way to introduce a hero of faith!
There are times when the Lord develops our faith by bringing us to territories and experiences that are foreign to us. The discomfort, shock, loss, and warring emotions bring us to our knees. During these seasons, we call on to him, holding on and trusting every word He says even when we can’t see where we are being led.
In the seeming haziness on the way to the place the Lord promised, let us choose to look at His sovereign hand that leads us instead of the tricky situation unfolding before our eyes. His ways are higher than ours and just like Abraham, we must obey His call without murmuring or delay.
When the Lord calls, we must answer. As we step out in faith, God will go with us.
A confident step in faith will allow the Lord to move mightily through us, blessing others and ourselves in the process. All it takes is for us to say “Yes, Lord!”
Is God calling you to a new place? Are you ready to heed his call even if it means leaving what you’ve been used to? How will you trust God and step out in faith?
