Then David said to the Philistine, “You come to me with a sword and with a spear and with a javelin, but I come to you in the name of the Lord of hosts.”
1 Samuel 17:45

A Sunday School teacher, trying to impress the boys in her class, told the story of David and Goliath. In the class was one lad with an attitude. He thought he was pretty tough, so the teacher bore down on how big Goliath was, picturing him as so big and tall that he would have dwarfed Yao Ming, the seven-foot-five giant of a basketball player. Then turning to the lad she asked, “How would you like to fight someone that big?”

Squirming, the lad replied, “No way, but if you bring on someone about my size, I’ll take him on any day.” The problem though is that the giants you have to face don’t come “special order.” Sometimes the problems of life—the difficulties and challenges you face—are no less foreboding than the giants whose strength and height make you feel like a midget, and they are certainly no less intimidating. When David faced his giant, Goliath, he had three options: turn and run, be intimidated by the giant, or confront the giant and defeat him with God’s help. So is it with the giant problems that confront you today— broken homes and hearts, financial problems that challenge your existence, difficulties with people, and health problems that just don’t go away. Some run away from their giants (problems) of life. Others live with the giant towering over them, intimidating them, making their lives miserable—something that God never intended you to face. Far too many are overcome by the giant in their life, not realizing that in the strength of the Holy Spirit you can defeat your giant.

Paul gave us the formula in Ephesians 6. That was how David defeated his giant, and with God’s help you can as well. As Paul commanded, “Be strong in the Lord.” You can defeat your giant.
