And above all these put on love, which binds everything together in perfect harmony.
And whatever you do, in word or deed, do everything in the name of the Lord Jesus, giving thanks to God the Father through him.”
Colossians 3:14,17

Did you know that you are called to show the love you have received from Christ?

In the third chapter of Colossians, the apostle Paul admonishes the believers from the church in Colossae to “put on their new self” now that their lives are hidden with Christ in God. He advises them to turn from their old ways and be good because Christ has already renewed them. But towards the end of the exhortation, the believers are asked to “put on love.” What does this mean?

As the passage states, “love… binds everything together in perfect harmony.” Harmony may remind many of music. Imagine an orchestra with its various instruments. Each instrument has a part, purpose and voice in the musical score. There is noise when the sounds from the instruments go against each other. However, when the instruments are played in sync, there is harmony no matter how different in nature each part of the orchestra may be. The differing sounds become whole.

When we live out the love that has changed and is continually changing us, the great things God is doing in our lives become more evident. The different parts of our lives—our faith, desires, work, hobbies, the people we care for and many others, no matter how seemingly diverse, become part of a vibrant story.  When we include love in the formula, what used to be dull, unsatisfying and frustrating become places where God can show us more of himself. Our response to the renewing that He is doing would be to do everything in His name, for His glory. When we have seen this love factor at work, we would respond with gratitude.

As we live daily with grateful hearts, those who need God’s love will see the difference. They would desire this love and once they have received it, the cycle will continue. As more people put on love, more of God’s love would be passed on. Together we will witness the wonderful harmonies that make up the masterpiece of God’s unfailing love. What a statement!

How has God’s love changed your life? Do you see it working through all aspects of your life? What can you do to share this love with others?
